What is this PRP?

The word PRP is a word formed from the English initials of the words platelet-rich plasma. It has nothing to do with the "STEM CELL" treatment formed in the public. It is applied in the form of injection to the area to be treated, after taking the person's own blood and undergoing a series of procedures in a sterile environment.

Although the methods determined for obtaining PRP have slight differences, it is basically prepared by drawing the platelet (platelet) layer, which is released as a result of separating a few ml of blood taken from the vein into blood elements by centrifugation (rotational precipitation) method, into an injector and is now ready for injection.

The main task of platelets;  for any reason is to help clotting to stop blood loss. In fact, in some diseases, having platelets above the normal level in the blood increases the risk of vascular occlusion, which is not within our scope and I will not talk about it.

Platelets perform different functions apart from helping to clot. What matters to us is their contribution to healing. They do this with the various proteins they contain, growth factors and substances that we can call hormones.

The procedures performed after the patient's blood is taken are to increase the concentration (amount) of platelets in the obtained fluid so that there should be at least 1 million platelets per cubic millimeter, and also to ensure that these substances hidden in these cells are released. Although there are different kits (sets)  on the market for this method, the basic features are the same as those listed above.

How to treat with PRP:

The PRP obtained in a sterile environment is in the injector and in liquid form. It must be injected into the area to be treated. It is also very important that this injection is made exactly to the desired area and that it is done by a specialist in this field.

During the injection process, the patient may feel some pain (which is already done to the painful area), but this is not a problem. After a while the pain will go away. It may be necessary not to use some painkillers under the control of your doctor for a while after the injection (so that the effectiveness of the injected substances does not decrease).  Below, the injection method to various body parts has been tried to be given with pictures.

Where PRP is made:

This treatment protocol can be used for many diseases other than cancer.  PRP treatment is not recommended for pregnant women and people with suppressed immune system. There are various usage areas in the world and in Turkey, I tried to list the examples below.

-  Various tendon diseases (tendinitis)

-  Joint calcifications  ( gonarthrosis, coxarthrosis etc )

-Incomplete or small tears in the tendon of the joint (for example, inside the shoulder, ankle, etc.)

- Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)

-Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis)

-Heel spur (epin calcanei)

- After some surgeries (especially after cartilage surgeries)  it can be done to increase the amount of healing and accelerate it.

Although PRP treatment is touted as a miraculous treatment in some media, it is stated that success has been achieved in all kinds of treatment. I would like to emphasize this to my patients, unfortunately, no treatment method is miraculous today.
